RECOFFEE Tree in the Bottle Shampoo innovative formula with 100% spent coffee grounds turns waste into gold!
Every day two billion people around the world drink coffee, producing an alarming number of 40,000 metric tons of coffee grounds per day. O’right aims to make an impact by changing public perception towards waste and motivating the brand’s wide consumer base to create sustainable value with green products. Our team meticulously created a formula containing coffee oils extracted from used coffee grounds and designed a biodegradable bottle made from coffee grounds and PLA with coffee seeds at the bottom that can grow into a tree when buried in soil. We aim to reduce wastes and make good use of the earth’s resources, fully achieving Cradle to Cradle certification. RECOFFEE Tree in the Bottle Shampoo won the Gold Medal and Special Award at international invention exhibitions INPEX and iENA, Red Dot Award: Best of the Best, and Red Dot CSR Award.
Materials and Techniques:
1. Ingredients: Coffee oil extracted from spent coffee grounds through a meticulous, anti-bacterial process of drying and supercritical fluid extraction, which can be completely decomposed within 28 days.
2. Biodegradable Bottle: The coffee-brown bottle is made from spent coffee grounds and PLA with no pigments added. PLA has high viscosity, low mold release capability, and long cooling time. After continuous development, testing, and repairing, biodegradable Material was added thus reducing the process from 3 min to 40 sec.
3. Bamboo Cap: Thermally treated biodegradable material is used to reduce damage to the environment. Bamboo is the world’s fastest growing plant and after 4 years, mature bamboo is harvested to give life to forests with its carbon sequestration capacity.
4. Seed Case: Countless moisture-proof methods ultimately lead to the development of the PLA foil to cover the seed case as the perfect packaging, designed for consumers to take out the seeds to plant beforehand.
