Global Demand and Green Energy Drive Taiwan’s Electric Scooter Market Boom
Date published 2020-04-30

Taipei, Taiwan, March 9, 2020 – Spurred by rising global demand and efforts to combat climate change, Taiwan’s electric scooter market is booming, and the country’s electric scooter is quickly establishing itself as the industry standard on the international stage. On the heels of its second anniversary, the Taiwan Electric Vehicle Alliance (TEVA) is also celebrating Taiwan’s growing global recognition as the “nation of electric scooters.”

Industry figures from organizations like Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and Freedonia underscore this rising electric scooter trend:

·Global sales of electric scooters reached almost 600,000 units in 2019. Sales in Asia accounted for 76% of global sales while Europe accounted for 8.8% and North America accounted for 7.5% (ITRI).

·The electric scooter market is projected to grow by an impressive 11% every year (Freedonia).

To combat climate change, governments around the world have proposed tax cuts, laws and regulations, subsidies, limits on high pollution vehicle production, and other important policies to reduce external costs and promote environmental protection, thus paving the way for the future of the electric scooter industry.

Recognizing this trend, the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) formed TEVA in 2018 and began leveraging the concept of a "national team" to promote Taiwanese electric vehicles abroad. TEVA has been embraced by hundreds of Taiwan companies from related industries and they have banded together to expand to international markets.

Active alliance members include electric vehicle ecosystem companies such as:

· Scooter manufacturers Gogoro, Aeon Motor, SYM, Kymco, and CMC Motor.

· Battery manufacturers Digi-Triumph, Molicel, J.S. Power, and Tron-e.

· Charging terminal manufacturers KS Terminals and Solteam.

Scooter-Related Industries to be Showcased at 3-in-1 Automobile-Related Expo, October 21-24TAITRA had planned to showcase several scooter-related industries at the major 3-in-1 automobile-related expo, Taipei AMPA, AutoTronics Taipei, and Motorcycle Taiwan, originally scheduled for April 15, 2020, to April 18, 2020. The event is postponed to October 21 to 24 at Nangang Exhibition Center Hall 2 to ensure the health and safety of participants. TAITRA will also showcase its scooter-related industries to INTERMOT Cologne in October this year to cultivate future business opportunities.

28th Taiwan Excellence Awards Honor Electric Scooter Products

Many Taiwanese brands have submitted noteworthy electric scooter products for the 28th Taiwan Excellence Awards, organized by the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and held by TAITRA.

Kymco won the Taiwan Excellence Silver Award for the Like 125 EV electric scooter which incorporated an Internet of Vehicles (IoV) system designed by Noodoe, another Taiwan Excellence award winner. The system combines a smart dashboard with smart phones to display the time, weather, speed, a compass, and other functions. Noodoe's navigation system also incorporates the first "road-focused navigation" concept. Moreover, the Like 125 EV is fitted with the iONEX Power System, an innovative design philosophy that overcomes many of the compromises often found in electric scooter designs such as at-home charging, zero-wait mobile charging, a shared outlet network, an open charging station platform, and other services.
